A businessman by nature, Marc Huehn is very competitive. Marc Huehn admits that he takes every task seriously, and that he wants to be the best in everything. Such an attitude may help Marc Huehn in the long run, as studies show that competitiveness is directly related to career length and advancement. It was previously thought that competitiveness led to burnout and early retirement among executives and professionals, but a study conducted by the psychology department of a local university over the past few years showed that it does the opposite.

“When competition fuels the mind of professionals like Marc Huehn, it gives them more mental endurance,” Otto Bricknell, the study leader, says.”You can compare it to a mental exercise that prevents the brain from remaining underused and lethargic.”

Marc Huehn was born on March 29, 1908 to Lukas and Hannah Huehn of Bavaria, Germany. The eldest of 4 children, Huehn grew up to become a pioneer of marine mammal research.

When Huehn was 4, his family moved to the Bahamas, a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean where his interest in marine life developed. Marc moved to California when he was 18 years old and graduated from Stanford University in Palo Alto with a degree in marine zoology in 1929. The next year, Mr Huehn went to Hawaii to finish his research on whale behavior and obtained his master’s degree. He then went on to pursue his doctoral degree while teaching as a professor in the same university. For the next couple of years, Marc Huehn worked as a researcher at Stanford University and later at Scripps Institution for Biological Research until he decided to head back home to the Bahamas to continue his research on whales and dolphins.

Marc Huehn’s work provided the earliest documentations of the underwater life of whales and dolphins. Marc was among the first to observe and document that dolphins use characteristic whistles and clicks. These were later identified as echolocation or SONAR.
